Stage 4b. Detailed Design & Technical/Construction Drawings
In tandem with Stage 4a, construction details are prepared; these illustrate how important or non-standard details are to be built.
These drawings are concerned with aesthetic, finishing and unusual details such as the roof edges, box gutters, timber cladding, green roofs, large dormers, timber structures, special window details and thresholds.
This also includes other additional drawings – window and doors schedule, indicative electrical layout, kitchen layout and any other drawings needed to smooth work on site.
If the design includes any elements that are other than absolutely standard (or the contractor is unfamiliar with the materials or technique), these additional drawings help the contractor build on site easily and ensure a higher level of quality and crisper finish.
Included in Stage 4b:
- Architectural drawings to illustrate key details where further information may be needed – eaves/ridges/abutments.
- Where applicable: Kitchen Plan, Indicative Electrical Layout, Window and Door Schedule.

A huge shout-out to @leaf.build for their expertise and thorough attention to detail. Their hard work on the stonework, complex scribing, and the extensive built-in storage has delivered a beautiful, crisp, yet utterly homely finish.

Caught up with some lovely clients to review their finished home improvement project. 🐾
The challenge here was interesting: we needed to design around the existing kitchen to create a bright, larger living area while ensuring the home was future-proofed for the long term.
The solution involved creating a dedicated boot room—perfect for muddy boots and acting as a "dog paws control area"—plus a much more generous ground floor shower room. It’s not just about adding space; it’s about creating practical, enjoyable spaces that work for the people (and pets) living in them.
A fantastic result that is sympathetic to the context of the building.

Back on Site and Charmed by a Period Home!
On my first site survey since breaking my collarbone in August, I was utterly charmed by the beautiful period features of this Bath home. It’s a wonderful example of how homeowners can retain original character while planning for a contemporary future.
I especially loved the unique hallway window, the perfectly proportioned double bay window, and the original front door with its stained glass. We won`t be changing these features. Instead, the focus of our home extension will be on creating a modern rear addition that provides all the space and facilities needed for today`s lifestyle.
Our goal is to create an extension that beautifully complements the existing house, giving the clients their dream home without losing any of its original charm. As a residential architect, I understand the importance of making the most of a home`s heritage while delivering a fantastic modern space.

Sometimes, the most beautiful spaces are hiding in plain sight. This home renovation shows how you can completely transform a space without needing a huge extension.
By simply re-working the layout—taking down internal walls, moving a door, and creating larger windows—we were able to create a bright and inviting environment perfect for modern family life. The new open plan kitchen and beautiful herringbone flooring connect the spaces and add real value to the home.
If you could transform one room in your home, which would it be?
